In The Future, The New Lithium Ion Battery Will Transform Electric Cars

Recently, British scientists have indicated that they are seeking to solve the problem of the long charging time of lithium batteries. The new lithium-ion battery technology will allow electric vehicles to move 200 miles in charging 10 minutes.  (PS: 1 mile is about 1.6 kilometers)

The British “Guardian” website reported on October 30 that Wang Chaoyang, a professor at Penn State University and co-author of the research report, comes up with: If there is a lot of fast charging facility on the roadside, drivers will no longer have to worry about the cruising range. After driving for 200 to 300 miles, if the battery is dead, it can continue to drive for more than 200 kilometers after 10 minutes of charging.”

Depending on reports, fast charging requires a strong current. Due to the reason that lithium metal will deposit around the anode, this charging method of the lithium battery may also cause a problem under low-temperature conditions, even at 30°C. When the temperature rises to about 60°C, lithium ions can move faster to avoid this problem, but it is still problematic to keep the battery at a high temperature.

Professor Wang indicated: ” At high temperatures, the battery active material reacts with the electrolyte to form a passivation film, which consumes active lithium and causes high electrical resistance.” He said that the formation of this film will take some time. So on this basis, the research team came up with the solution, which is to keep the battery at 60°C as long as it is enough to charge.

The research team also developed a new lithium ion battery that uses a thin nickel foil to create an internal self-healing structure. They heat the battery to 60°C and then cool it to normal temperature. It is possible to conclude that the charging method can be recharged and can be charged to 80% in 10 minutes without damaging the battery.

The team used smaller battery cells in the research (approximately 10amp/hours). At the same time, they said that this new lithium ion battery can be used to electric vehicles.
